Thodoris Pistiolas
Thodoris Pistiolas is a visual artist and musician from Greece. He has a master degree in Virtual Reality and Multiuser Interface Systems of Artistic Expression in a collaborative program of the Athens school of Fine Arts and Paris 8. He studied painting in the University of Fine Arts of Thessaloniki with Vangelis Dimitreas, music composition in Nakas conservatory in Athens with Josef Papadatos and cello in Neon conservatory in Thessaloniki with Giorgos Manolas and in Athens with Fabiola Ojeda. His visual art work is based on underwater photography, ink, watercolor and sound installations.
He was a member of the electronic-indie band “Sigmatropic” which is based in Athens with a wealthy discography and collaborations with artists such as Alejandro Escovedo, Mark Eitzel, Cat Power, Carla Torgerson (The Walkabouts),Mick Harvey and Jim Sklavounos(Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Robert Wyatt and others.
He took part in performances using image and sound collaborating with other artists like Savina Giannatou(musician), Radart team (visual arts team consisting of Giorgos Gyparakis, Alexandros Psychoulis and Kostas Ioannidis) – 1995, a performance with Athanasios Argianas(image artist) in Acropolis museum for the 2500 years of the marathon run – 2010, with Christina Foitou (visual artist and performer), Natalia Partheniou(dancer) and Xristos Alaveras (visual artist and performer) in Rethymno, Crete – 2012, with Athanasios Argianas in Jisdaraki museum - ex muslim temple in Athens – 2012, with the painter and perfomance artist Maria Sevastaki and percussionist Nikos Touliatos in the Athens School of Fine Arts' theater - 2014 and was a member of the Allopix group which represented Greece in the 2015 Young Artists Biennale in Milan with their performance "Penduloop".
In 2017 he composed and performed the music for "Filira" project with the swiss artist Maelle Gross and composed the music for Aliki Tsakoumi's short film "Ifigenia", he took part in the "Easter island" performance theater by Lysandros Spetsieris as a composer and performer. He also took part in the Scratch Orchestra workshop during the Documenta 14, he performed in Generous Structure/Kunsthochschule Kassel's "Perform Interdependency" in Athens, in the performance that never happend with artist Ivan Masteropoulos not reading live in russian, Andreas Empeirikos' "Oktana" in the EX-ILS exhibition and in the 2nd Festival of Contemporary Dance “Compartments dance project”.
He had three solo painting exhibitions (1997 in Lemnos island, 2003 in Athens, 2013 in Athens), an underwater photography exhibition in 2003 in Athens and various group exhibitions. In 2017 he collaborated with artist Ibrahim Mahama for an underwater project.
In 2018 he performed his pieces "La mer" and "Ifigenia" in Xtetx experimental music platform's event in Espace des Arts Sans Frontières in Paris. In the same year he performed with the dancers of Paris 8 university in Passages during the Semain des Arts.
Cover stories featuring his underwater photographs have been published as well as his own articles on underwater photography. He has been a member of an underwater exploration team as a photographer.
